Dine and Discuss
"Anna Karenina" relates the doomed love affair between the sensuous and rebellious Anna and the dashing officer Count Vronsky. Set against a vast and richly textured canvas of nineteenth-century Russia, Anna's tragedy unfolds with relentless force as she rejects her passionless marriage to the aging official Karenin and must endure the hypocrisies of society. Join Claudia Traudt for lunch at Corner Cooks as she sheds light on Tolstoy's masterpiece. Claudia Traudt holds a BFA in Painting from Saint Mary's College at Notre Dame and an MA from The Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago, where she focused on literature and did dissertation work on Shakespeare, Joyce, and Yeats. Hard Boiled: The Classic American Detective
The British have Sherlock Holmes and Miss Marple. We Americans have Sam Spade, Philip Marlowe, Nick and Nora Charles. These are our "hard-boiled" American detectives - heavy-drinking, no-nonsense loners who are nevertheless honorable men with a soft spot for dames. Professor Cynthia Rutz will explore the code of this American brand of detective: this tough guy, good with a gun, whose "rude wit, disgust for sham, and contempt for pettiness" is so much a part of the American ideal. Tickets are $25.
